For the first ever Hike with History, I cover a segment the lesser known Mountains to Sea Trail. This approximately 1,200 mile hike is broken up in to 18 segments and segment 18 starts on Ocracoke and ends up at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in the Nags Head, Outer Banks area of North Carolina.

This segment is pretty easy as far as hiking goes…but will take you a couple days as it is one of the longer sections

Tips

Cedar Island Ferry costs $1 for hikers (as of writing) and is a solid 2.5 hour ride.

Hatteras Ferry is free for people walking on and is a 1 hour ride from Ocracoke to Hatteras.

Ocracoke Campground: Requires a reservation in advance and can be made on NPS.gov.

Amenities: You trek right through the main drag of Ocracoke and then when you hit Hatteras you have tons of restaurants, hotels, etc. Summer is busy tourist season down there so keep that in mind if you want a hotel.

Mileage: This segment (18th of 18) is 84 miles long…so it’s gonna take a while and will likely be a lot of road walking. I would say that there is basically no elevation gain except one long bridge you’ll need to walk over.
