We finally wrote down everything we know about Gettysburg

It’s been a while since you heard from me here, and that’s on me. We’ve been filming, the app has taken most of the rest…but I’ve been wanting to put something together that was actually useful, and it’s finally done.

There’s a new Gettysburg guide on the site.

Everything we’d tell you if you called us up and said you were going. Where to park, what to see, what most people drive right past, and what’s worth the hour’s drive once you’re out there.

A couple of things in it that surprised me when we put it together:

The spot where Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address is not where the monument stands. The Park Service worked out the real location back in the late 1990s, and most people walk right by it.

And if you only do one thing on the whole battlefield, walk Pickett’s Charge backwards…park at Seminary Ridge and go out across that open ground the way they did. Fifteen minutes. It changes how you understand the whole third day.

Go in the fall if you can.

The leaves come off the ridgelines, the corn comes down, and the terrain suddenly makes sense in a way it just doesn’t in August. Mid-October through November is the window. (And November 19th is the anniversary of the Address, if you want a reason to pick a weekend.)
