Why start Route 66 at the Gateway to the West?
At Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis, Scott and historian Jenn kick off their Route 66 centennial series at the symbolic “Gateway to the West,” where Lewis and Clark launched the Corps of Discovery after the 1803 Louisiana Purchase.
They explore the Arch’s underground museum, trace the expedition’s route and purpose—mapping, diplomacy, trade, and the failed search for a waterway to the Pacific—and share what it’s like riding the cramped tram pods 630 feet to the top of the world’s tallest arch.
Next, they head deeper into Missouri to a Bonnie and Clyde hideout.
