Episode 1 – Talk With History Intro
[00:00:00] Jenn: is it the one you liked from like
[00:00:16] Scott: the one that sounds like national treasure?
[00:00:17] Jenn: Yeah.
[00:00:18] Scott: Okay. So this is the talk with history podcast. So this is our very first one and this is an introduction. Yeah. Uh, so my name is Scott. I will be the host. Of this podcast. And
[00:00:31] Jenn: my name is Jen.
[00:00:32] Scott: Your name is Jen. Jen, tell us who you are.
[00:00:36] Jenn: I am the host of walk with history on YouTube. And this talk with history will be more of a personal in-depth look to those episodes. So we will talk about just the research and the thought process and. The history that goes into making each of those videos.
[00:01:00] Scott: Okay. Now tell us about yourself. So I’ll introduce myself since I’m the host.
[00:01:06] Yes. Uh, Scott, I am from California. I’m a California kid. And if people don’t know already, you and I are husband and wife. Yes. So, um, 15 years, 15 years, we got married 15 years, 15 short years ago,
[00:01:21] Jenn: 15 years. You don’t even know,
[00:01:23] Scott: Hey, I’m the one who remembers when our anniversary is. And the year that we got married.
[00:01:29] So I’m, I’m the host. I work with you on the walk with history, YouTube channel. Um, I would say work with you, but I do I’ll. I’ll just go ahead and say that I do the heavy lifting when it comes to the production side. I will tell everybody here that Jen does all the research, all the outlines, she finds the topics.
[00:01:49] She finds and seeks out the content. And I do all the, basically the backend stuff. Yes so we’ve actually made a really good team and I joke with a lot of people that we finally found something after 14 years and change that we enjoy doing together.
[00:02:04] And that is the, that is the walk of history, YouTube channel. So after that, um, we’ve. Been doing we’re coming up on 30 episodes here. Yes. For the walk with history. And we decided to start talk with history. So you just mentioned a little bit about what taco’s history is going to be about. Who are you tell, tell someone who hasn’t seen walk with history, who you are, where you’re from and your background.
[00:02:28] Jenn: And so I am Jennifer. I am a veteran. So I was in the U S military for almost eight years and I was a Naval aviator. You’ll probably hear me say that a lot. It’s a running joke. Um, because pilots like to tell people that they’re pilots, I flew. Helicopters in the Navy. And after I got out of the Navy, I decided to go back to school and I used the GI bill, the post nine 11 GI bill.
[00:02:59] And I got a master’s degree of American history from the university of Memphis. And I got a graduate certificate in museum studies from the university of Memphis. But being in a military family, we move around a lot. So it’s hard to find a job that’s kind of stationary. And once COVID happened, I started watching a lot of YouTube channels about history, and I was noticing that people just.
[00:03:29] We’re barely scratching the surface of some things and they weren’t giving, they were showing some information, some locations weren’t really relaying on why that would matter to me or what was interesting to maybe the viewer. So I thought, and I brought it up to you. What if I did a YouTube channel?
[00:03:51] What if we started a YouTube channel and we could go to the historic places and locations and talk about their impact of history and history makers and the influence people will feel from them today that they might not even notice or what these people did that actually changed the course of history and just kind of make it fun.
[00:04:14] And because history can be fun and just try to connect it to today to have a better future for people. So that’s who I am. That’s what I, what we do. And I really enjoy.
[00:04:30] Scott: Yeah. So I joke all the time. And this is for anyone who doesn’t know us, but I joke all the time to Jen that she’s a 65 year old person trapped in a smoking hot 40 year old body.
[00:04:44] Um, and, uh, and to those listening who are curious about this, this podcast, um, I am not a history fan like you are, but one of the things that I’ve learned. That you’ve taught me is that all this stuff that I learned in high school, There’s a whole lot more to it, all the stuff that I learned in college, there’s a whole lot more to it.
[00:05:11] And I have grown to become more interested in these interesting tidbits that you pull out. Because the one thing that I will say that you do well on the walk with history, YouTube channel. And I think that you’ll go in more depth here because you do a great job of talking about the impact of a historical event that we’ve all heard of and how.
[00:05:32] Has impacted our lives and continues to impact our lives, um, today. So I’m, I’m excited to continue to let you kind of dive deeper into those walkway walks with history because on a YouTube channel on a 15 minute video, there’s a lot of information that we just can’t get all in. And so this is the podcast for someone who wants to dive a little bit deeper.
[00:05:56] Jenn: I think, I think you saw the. Example of that come to fruition with our Arlington video, because I had really stressed that I wanted to go to Arlington and film Maurine O’hara’ grave. And I think at first you weren’t even sure who Maurine O’hara was. And I had to kind of explain who she was and I was just so excited about her.
[00:06:21] I had grown up with John Wayne movies. And we had actually at one time gone to Ireland and we had gone to Kong Ireland where they filmed the quiet man. And I basically drug you all around Ashford, castle, and where they filmed the quiet man and the cottage. And it was such a great experience. And I know you liked it after we were there.
[00:06:44] And Maurine O’hara is actually buried in Arlington and most people don’t know that because her husband was a Brigadier general and he was a pilot and he had died. And you, if you’re a spouse of someone who was buried in Arlington, then you can be buried in Arlington. And she, she always wants to be buried there with him.
[00:07:03] And she passed recently, I’d say, Three to five years. And I had tried to find someone going to her grave in Arlington, and there was nothing on YouTube. About her. So I wondered if people even knew she was there. So I had really stressed to you that I wanted to do that video. And you really, you weren’t sure you were kind of like, okay.
[00:07:25] And then when I did it, that video was the one for us that has really taken off, had a lot of viewers. And I’m really thankful since I have done it, more people have filmed her grave at Arlington, but I think we do a really good job. Telling people who she was, especially in reference to John Wayne and cause she was one of his biggest costars and who she was just as an actress.
[00:07:54] And so I think those are the things I try to relay different. Movies that she did. And leading men that she had worked with and then people and I, I also, you know, I tell people how she was with Lucy the first time she met Desi Arnaz so just Lucille ball, Lucille ball. Yeah. Yes. So those are the kinds of things I try to connect for people that, that these stars are kind of all influencing each other.
[00:08:22] Working together and building that part of, you know, media together. But yeah, Marino hair. I know Scott is coming to realize a little more, but she’s a big deal. She’s a big deal when it comes to movies and I’m a, I’m a big Turner classic movie fan, and I’ve gone to the Turner classic movies, weekends in LA when we lived in California.
[00:08:45] And she’s a big, she’s a big star to people who like classic movies. So I was very. Proud and privileged to have showcased her grave at Arlington. And that still to this day is our biggest video on YouTube.
[00:09:00] Scott: Yeah, that was, uh, one of the surprising things for me was. You know, it, it took, I think three or four weeks. And then all of a sudden we just started getting like hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and thousands of views. And that, that video is that close to 50,000 views now. Um, so for a brand new YouTube channel, that was, that was pretty exciting that that was someone I’ve been doing YouTube videos for a few years, just kind of her family stuff and things like that.
[00:09:25] But, um, one of the other things for. Walk with history and talk with history is when you find a niche, that’s interesting that people are interested in that you’re passionate about. And that’s what excited me about this. About not only the YouTube channel now doing a podcast and, and us getting to talk more about it.
[00:09:47] You getting to talk more about it because there might be people out there who want to hear more about the video, but there also might be people out there. Watch YouTube as much, and they do lots of podcasts. So, um, I think this is an exciting opportunity for us and I’m happy that we get to start this.
[00:10:06] Jenn: It’ll be really great. I think this’ll be good for anyone who you don’t have to watch the walk with history videos. If you just want to hear about what it, how our historian is thinking and how our historian is trying to give you the information in the most researched. I wouldn’t say non-biased because you always have to be aware of your personal bias, but you’re trying to do all the research and cover all the bases and present all the facts that are out there.
[00:10:36] And try not to have an agenda. When you present the facts, just present the facts and the listener or the viewer can decide for themselves. I do believe my subscribers and my audience are. Educated and smart people and they can decide for themselves how they feel about something. I’ll just give them the information.
[00:10:56] And I think a good historian does that. I’m not trying to hide something from you. So you think one way or another, I’m trying to give it all to you. So you understand who this person was and, or this event was in its entirety, because I think that is how I build trust and how you’ll come to. No, that the information I’m giving you is reliable.
[00:11:22] Scott: Yup. So I think, um, again, so this podcast is really a couple of things, right? It’s a little bit of behind the scenes of walk with history. How’d we get there, interesting things we saw there that weren’t really relevant to the video, what it was like driving around in the Mississippi Delta, trying to find different historical sites.
[00:11:40] Um, so it’s behind the scenes. It is. Deeper dive into some of those videos. If you watch the videos and you’ve come here to the podcast, and it’s also what you said about talking about how historians think and research and how they try to remove, like you said, their personal bias. So I think those three things for those, anyone listening, if you’re interested in that kind of stuff behind the scenes videos of how to, how to film videos like this on YouTube.
[00:12:10] For research based insight into these historical. Events as well as how historian thinks research is and what you think as a historian. I think this is the podcast for, for you the listener. So yeah. Thank you again for those who downloaded and listened, um, please feel free to kind of continue to subscribe in whatever podcast player that you guys are using.
[00:12:35] And we will talk to you guys next week. Thank you.
